The New Zealand Possum was introduced from Australia, into heavily forested areas of New Zealand in 1858. Slightly larger than the domestic cat, the possum is a nocturnal, fur bearing marsupial. Introduced solely for the purpose of establishing a fur trade within New Zealand, the possum quickly adjusted to the favourable conditions and thrived overwhelmingly in the temperate climate. To help protect New Zealand’s magnificent forests,possum numbers are heavily controlled, which provides the basis for a highly successful wild fur industry. The favorable New Zealand climate, combined with the possums ability to thrive in harsh winters, have given the possum a dense, soft fur that is highly sought after for garments and fashion accessories.
